For those of you unfamiliar with OnePunch Man, you need to get onto the bandwagon and start reading this. It is a ridiculous superhero battle manga originally running as a webcomic, illustrated and written by ONE (pen name) since 2009. This series pretty much went viral, and is currently being re-made by superb illustrator Yusuke Murata who was awesome enough to bring us Eyeshield 21. If you are not sure what I mean by ridiculous, the character designs, names and even their backgrounds are amazingly outlandish.
The story follows Saitama, a young adult who serves as a hero for a hobby with an overpowered punch that blasts his enemies into oblivion. This sounds like an awesome gift, but he absolutely hates it to the point of indifference because there is no fear, no excitement or joy, just waning emotions. However, there is hope when he meets Genos, a cyborg who he accidentally saves from destruction, with a simple flick of the wrist. Genos is in awe of his strength, and quickly pushes in on Saitamas life requesting he become his master. Their personality differences make for quite a bit of humor, and Saitama is usually drawn quite plain compared to the background and other characters, which in itself can bring on a chuckle in certain situations.
I am skeptical about the anime scheduled to air October 1st, I really hope they can pull off the humor that is so well executed in the manga. I think it will be a fun series to watch, and I will give my thoughts when the anime starts to air. Comedy is a difficult subject and if the animation or voicing is off then the whole scene can be a total flop. There are so many amazing great moments in Onepunch Man, even if they miss the mark with a few there is plenty more to work with.
This sounds right up my alley – look forward to checking the anime out in October!
